A Sad Day for Programmers Everywhere

March 17, John W. Backus died.

Backus was the computer scientist most famous for FORTRAN, the first high-level programming language and creator of the Backus-Naur form, the most commonly used form to define many programming languages and other communication protocols. He was the recipient of the Turing Award, the highest honor for the computer programming field.
